There are more than likely no hardcore fans of TWILIGHT out there amongst our readers but I would venture to guess who do have our fair share of haters of the vampire romance series. After half a decade of films, we finally got a year with no TWILIGHT film hitting screens, but we probably will never fully escape the shadow of the box office behemoth that begot FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and countless other imitators.
Seven years after first playing the monotone and stiff Bella, actress Kristen Stewart has just begun to spread her acting talents and regain some respect from movie fans. With roles in ON THE ROAD, CAMP X-RAY, and the critically lauded CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA and STILL ALICE, Stewart was interviewed by Patti Smith in the latest issue of Interview Magazine. Smith asked Stewart about her experience making TWILIGHT and how it affected her choice of roles moving forward.
Right. I mean, it was a long process, so it’s hard to generalize about it as a whole. It wasn’t entirely cohesive. We ebbed and flowed. I will definitely acknowledge that. But the intention is so fucking pure in a weird way. Anybody who wants to talk shit about Twilight, I completely get it, but there’s something there that I’m endlessly, and to this day, fucking proud of. My memory of it felt—still feels—really good.
I can respect Kristen Stewart for being loyal to her creative decisions. She could have easily discounted TWILIGHT as a paycheck and that she did a shitty job, but instead she sticks with her choices in the role and has moved on with her career. I liked Stewart before TWILIGHT and am beginning to appreciate her now that it is behind her. Hopefully, she proves it was just a chapter in her filmography that never needs to be revisited.
