Lanterns won’t be renewed for a second season without a “worthy” story in place

Lanterns has been a big success for DC Studios, which has desperately needed a win after the failure of Supergirl. With largely positive reviews and strong viewership numbers, a second season seems like a no-brainer, but DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran says Lanterns won’t be renewed for a second season unless they can figure out a worthy follow-up.

When Will We Hear About Lanterns Season 2?

Safan told Collider, “If we’re able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that’s what’s going to dictate whether there’s a second season.” He added that such news should come “before the end of the year.“

The first season wasn’t without its share of controversy, but Safran said the “most gratifying” thing about the show was that it brought Green Lantern back into the conversation.

Another Earth-Based Story

Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy has previously said that the new season would likely be another Earth-based story, although, much like the first season, they can leave the planet on occasion.

“We won’t be back in Rushville most likely unless something crazy happens in Rushville, you know, every 10 years. But you’re going to—it’s going to be an Earth-based story that we continue most likely,” he said. “I mean, would you—we’ve shown that you can leave the planet, so that’s good, right? But because of that, we want to make whoever’s here as sort of grounded and real as possible. Our idea was just to ground everything and then layer on the other layers.”

Mundy added that they weren’t necessarily thinking of a second season while developing the first, but they also didn’t assume it would be a one-and-done. “We didn’t write toward platforming for our Season 2,” he said. “We always wrote assuming there would be a Season 2, you know what I mean? We didn’t think of it as a limited series. We thought of it as this is a show that’s going to keep going on, but we were just trying by the skin of our teeth to finish this season.“

Gunn has always maintained that no project would move forward without a great script, and it seems that’s true for the potential second season of Lanterns as well. However, as fans have discovered, those “great” scripts aren’t always crowd-pleasers.
