Last Night in Soho clip features ambition and sleaze in the 1960s

Anya Taylor-Joy plays a singer in Edgar Wright’s film Last Night in Soho, and yesterday we shared a music video for the cover of the song “Downtown” that Taylor-Joy recorded for the movie. Today we have a minute-long clip from the film that shows Taylor-Joy’s character doing what it takes to pursue a music career… and unfortunately it takes interacting with a character played by former Doctor Who star Matt Smith. I say unfortunately because, although Taylor-Joy’s character doesn’t seem to mind at the moment, this guy happens to be dripping with sleaziness. The clip can be seen the embed above.

The fact that Thomasin McKenzie shows up in Taylor-Joy’s reflection in the clip tips off the fact that there are some out-of-the-norm things going on in this psychological thriller. Wright is best known for having a strong comedic element in his movies, but he took a much more serious approach than usual for this one. While writing the script with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, he was drawing inspiration from the likes of Don’t Look Now and Repulsion.

Last Night in Soho stars McKenzie and Taylor-Joy as characters named Eloise and Sandie. The film centers on

a young girl, passionate in fashion design, who is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters her idol, a dazzling wannabe singer. But 1960s London is not what it appears, and time seems to fall apart with shady consequences…

Much of the story takes place in

the London of the Swinging Sixties; a time period with which Eloise is obsessed and, through a mysterious connection with Sandie, gets to experience.

McKenzie, Taylor-Joy, and Smith are joined in the cast by Michael Ajao, Synnøve Karlsen, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, Rita Tushingham, and Margaret Nolan. Sadly, both Rigg and Nolan passed away in 2020, so Last Night in Soho marks the last film appearances for both of them.

Wright produced the film with Nira Park and Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

Last Night in Soho is set to reach theatres on October 29th. You can read our 9/10 review at THIS LINK.
