Liebesman Battles

Back in April we told you about a potentially kickass project called BATTLE: LOS ANGELES. Okay, it’s an incredibly lame title. But the synopsis brings out the young geek in me: A Marine platoon battles against an alien invasion on the streets of Los Angeles.

Sorry, but that would be f*cking wonderful if done right… But will it be done right? That’s up to Jonathan Liebesman, who has just been hired to direct the film for Columbia Pictures. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Liebesman beat out several other prospects for the job by making a whiz-bang presentation that showed his specific vision and passion for the project, described as “Black Hawk Down” meets “Independence Day.”

Yeah, sounds like the greatest thing ever, right? Well, consider that Liebesman only has two major movies to his credit: DARKNESS FALLS and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING. Both are above-average visually, and while neither are very good, both stink of interference on the studio’s part (this is especially true in the case of DARKNESS FALLS). I’m just wondering what the scale size for this thing is going to be. Liebesman’s hiring leads me to believe it’s on the smaller side, even though it screams BIG!!! Time will tell…

Liebesman worked with Jordana Brewster on TCM:TB, so he’s not all bad…
