Lilo & Stitch 2 and Incredibles 3 set 2028 release dates at Disney

Shortly after his ascension to CEO at Disney, Josh D’Amaro is coming out swinging with news about two of the studio’s most anticipated releases. Today, D’Amaro announced release dates for Lilo & Stitch 2 and Incredibles 3. According to D’Amaro, Lilo & Stitch 2 runs amok in theaters on May 26, 2028, Memorial Day weekend, while Pixar’s Incredibles 3 opens on June 16, 2028.

Lilo & Stitch get that green

Last year, Disney’s live-action reimagining of Lilo & Stitch was a Memorial Day weekend fire-starter, with a four-day launch total of $182 million, besting 2023’s Top Gun: Maverick ($160.5M). Lilo & Stitch remained strong at the box office for several weeks. Once all was said and done, the live-action animated hybrid earned a worldwide total of $1,038,027,526.

Speaking of billion-dollar earners, Pixar‘s Incredibles franchise is no slouch, after earning a combined total of $1.87 billion off the first two films. Pixar will switch things up for Incredibles 3, with Elemental director Peter Sohn stepping in to direct while Brad Bird (who helmed the first two Incredibles movies) is writing the screenplay. In addition to Lilo & Stitch 2 and Incredibles 3, Pixar is hard at work on producing Coco 2, with plans to release the sequel to its 2017 hit in 2029.

Disney loves a sequel

Predictably, Disney could not wait to green-light a Lilo & Stitch sequel after watching ticket sales soar for the reimagined comedy inspired by its 2002 animated classic. There are no story details for Lilo & Stitch 2 yet, but Disney did release a straight-to-video sequel in 2005 called Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch. In the sequel, a malfunction threatens to destroy Stitch and his friendship with Lilo! That could be part of the plot, but I’ve got a feeling Disney will elaborate on that story for the live-action sequel, if they bother to re-create Sitch Has a Glitch at all.

What do you think about Disney’s strategy of producing one sequel after another? Are you down for another Lilo & Stitch and Incredibles movie, or do you want the mouse to go back to the well for some original ideas? Let us know in the comments section below.
