Lionsgate plans FOUR Hunger Games movies instead of three?

Finally, some interesting HUNGER GAMES news that isn’t a minor casting update or lame set photo! That’s not to say it’s good interesting.

In a Deadline.com article about Lionsgate’s high hopes for the franchise it’s revealed that the studio is evidently planning four movies based on the title. Since there are only three books, it’s obvious that they are taking a page out of HARRY POTTER and TWILIGHT‘s playbook, splitting one of the novels (presumably the final one) into two separate movies. This is a fairly annoying trend, but I suppose if you’re a suit looking to milk as much as you can from a profitable brand name, you can see the appeal.

I guess it’s silly of me to bring up this prospect: What if the movies aren’t successful?

In other news, THE HUNGER GAMES was apparently the studio’s highest selling movie ever at Cannes, meaning there was no lack of interest in the title on the part of overseas exhibitors. Expect the movie to have a mammoth worldwide opening when it comes out early next year.
