2019 Netflix Preview

Each year, Netflix and other streaming services continue to up the ante on the quality of their films. In 2018, Netflix had movie theater quality releases like Andy Serkis' MOWGLI, Alfonso Cuaron's acclaimed ROMA, the Sandra Bullock starring horror drama BIRD BOX, and the brilliantly marketed THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX. While Netflix is sure to drop some unexpected releases through 2019, there are already ten on the calendar that range from animated fare for kids to eagerly anticipated dramas that debuted at film festivals last year..

GODZILLA: THE PLANET EATER (January 9th)

Synopsis: Epic re-imagining of the Godzilla world in a futuristic setting that pits humans and robots against the biggest Godzilla ever seen in an interplanetary struggle for survival. With the earth alliance weakened, Haruo weighs siding with the Exif, whose death cult is summoning a monster that can destroy the world.

Starring: Mamoru Miyano, Takashiro Sakurai, and Tomokazu Sugita.

CLOSE (January 18th)

Synopsis: An adrenaline-pumping action thriller inspired by the life of the world’s leading female bodyguard, Jacquie Davis. Sam, a counter-terrorist expert used to war zones, who takes on the job of protecting Zoe, a young and rich heiress — a babysitting job for her. But a violent attempted kidnapping forces the two to go on the run. Now they’ve got to take some lives — or lose theirs.

GIRL (January 18th)

Synopsis: With the support of her father, a 15-year-old transgender girl pursues her dream of becoming a professional ballerina. Winner of the Camera d’Or for best first film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival as well as the Best Actor Prize for Un Certain Regard.

VELVET BUZZSAW (February 1st)

Synopsis: A thriller set in the contemporary art world scene of Los Angeles, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce. After a series of paintings by an unknown artist are discovered, a supernatural force enacts revenge on those who have allowed their greed to get in the way of art.

Starring:  Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer, Tom Sturridge, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, John Malkovich and Billy Magnussen.

THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND (March 1st)

Synopsis: Against all the odds, a thirteen year old boy in Malawi invents an unconventional way to save his family and village from famine. Based on the true story of William Kamkwamba.

Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Noma Dumezweni, and Joseph Marcell

THE DIRT (March 22nd)

Synopsis: Based on the bestselling autobiography from Mötley Crüe, the film is an unflinching tale of success and excess as four misfits rise from the streets of Hollywood to the heights of international fame.

Starring: Douglas Booth, Iwan Rheon, Machine Gun Kelly, Daniel Webber, Tony Cavalero, Leven Rambin, and David Costabile

Synopsis: A postman is posted to a frozen town in the North – where he discovers Santa Claus is hiding out.

Synopsis: A boy receiving treatment for his auto-immune disorder discovers that the house he's living isn't as safe as he thought.
