Well this sure as hell didn’t take long. IGN had a chance to talk with George A. Romero on the much anticipated LAND OF THE DEAD UnRated DVD.
So what kind of juicy extras didn’t we get to see in theaters? How much more gore is there going to be in this UnRated cut?Romero had this to say:“There’s a few things. There is one scene in particular where [John Leguizamo’s] Cholo, before he meets [Dennis Hopper’s] Kaufman, he goes into a neighboring penthouse and finds a human that hung himself and has to kill him. That was a scene that we felt didn’t turn out as effectively as it could have and we didn’t think it was necessary so that’s really the only major scene from the original script that’s gone.”
Apart from that major scene, a few extra lines, and brief gore, there’s not much else to LOTD. He did say that he used the Stanley Kubrick trick of placing CGI people in certain scenes to cover up gore (like the orgy scene in EYES WIDE SHUT)- but no word if those scenes will be restored to the original bloodbath- at least not yet.
He also talked about his involvement with MASTERS OF HORROR, as well as possible sequels to LOTD:
“I have a couple of other things that we are working on, but everything would get trumped if they want to do a sequel to this.”
Either way, Romero behind the camera again is a blessing, and I’ll take it any way I can! MASTERS would be a sweet project to be apart of, but more sequels to LOTD would be even better! Only time will tell how well LOTD does at the box office- if it kicks ass, I smell sequel!
