Lucasfilm cancels 3D re-releases of Star Wars to focus on Episode VII

So far, every decision Disney has made in regards to the STAR WARS franchise has been positive. From the recent hiring of JJ Abrams to direct STAR WARS: EPISODE VII to the inclusion of Lawrence Kasdan as a consultant and their attempt to woo poster artist Drew Struzan out of retirement, Disney and Lucasfilm look poised to treat the fans to the STAR WARS saga we have all been dreaming of.

The latest decision from the studios is the choice to cancel the releases of all 3D conversion of the STAR WARS movies in favor of focusing on development of STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and beyond. I think this is the right move and not just because 3D re-releases are a waste of time. Up until the merger, STAR WARS was relegated to ancillary products since there were no big screen prospects in sight. Now that Lucas has loosened his grip on the series, focus can now be given to making blockbuster movies.

I would assume that at this point in the process, they would have at least been close to completing the 3D conversion on EPISODE II or III, but you never know. I am sure the lackluster reception for STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE in 3D had something to do with this decision. So, if things go well with progress on STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, we may see these all on the big screen someday.
