It was announced in September that Illumination had partnered with Nintendo in order to make an animated Super Mario Bros. movie. If all goes well, this could just be the start of a new Super Mario Bros. franchise, and one spin-off possibility is a Luigi’s Mansion movie.

The Super Mario Bros. movie stars Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario with Charlie Day set to lend his voice to Luigi. While speaking with ComicBook.com, Day was asked whether or not he’d be down for a Luigi’s Mansion movie.

Yeah, my son was just playing Luigi’s Mansion the other day on his Switch. Look, I’m thrilled to get the opportunity, I grew up playing Super Mario Brothers as did everyone I know so, we’ll see! It’s like anything else in life, I’ll go if I’m invited!

The Luigi’s Mansion games typically involve Luigi investigating some form of haunted location and using ghost-hunting devices to capture ghosts. The most recent installment of the franchise, Luigi’s Mansion 3, was released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019. In addition to Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, the Super Mario Bros. movie also features the voices of Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalo as Foreman Spike.

Even since it was first announced that Chris Pratt would be voicing the iconic character, there’s been a bit of a backlash; so much so that Illumination founder and Mario movie producer Chris Meledandri had to respond. “All I can tell you is the voice that he’s doing for us, and Mario, is phenomenal,” Meledandri said. “Yeah, I can’t wait for people to hear it.” He added that although the over-the-top accent (It’s a-me, Mario!) will be touched upon in the movie, “that’s not the tenor of [Chris Pratt’s] performance throughout the film.” The Super Mario Bros. movie is slated for a December 21, 2022 release.
