M. Night Shyamalan hints that Unbreakable 2 may be happening

UNBREAKABLE is far and away my favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie. Since first seeing it, I have consistently ranked it as one of the best superhero movies of all time because of the sheer difficulty in bringing original superheroes to the big screen. Despite his flubs and poor directing choices over the last several years, it would be nice to see him return to a story that was well received by all.

In this interview with MTV, Shyamalan was once again asked about the potential for an UNBREAKABLE sequel. Back in 2010, he shot down notions of a second film saying that he was adapting his villain for UNBREAKABLE 2 into the third of his NIGHT CHRONICLES movies (DEVIL is the only one of those made to date). Now, though, he seems to have changed his tune. When asked about the status of a sequel, Shyamalan said it is “on his agenda” and

As long as it can be connected to something that I’m feeling right now, then I’ll work for me.

If you watch the video of his answer, Shyamalan does not seem to be bullshitting and sounds like he actually is thinking about UNBREAKABLE 2. Of all of his films, UNBREAKABLE is the only one that could really have an organic continuation to the story. I would love to see Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson reprise their roles. Even visiting these characters 15 years later and seeing how their roles as hero and villain have developed would be fascinating.

I just hope Shyamalan doesn’t get in his own way in writing the script.
