Not sure if this is surprising or completely unsurprising news. With GRINDHOUSE’s recent, well-publicized underperformance at the box-office, you couldn’t blame Robert Rodriguez for nixing his plans for a full-length MACHETE, that dirty ode to vigilantism starring Danny Trejo as a machete-wielding soldier of fortune who teams up with Cheech, slices up his enemies, and prefers his threesome-tangos underneath waterfalls.
Yet Rodriguez, according to Trejo, is all about completing the flick… Says Trejo to Rotten Tomatoes: “Machete” could even be Robert Rodriguez’s next movie. “They were going to try to make ‘Sin City [2]’ before ‘Machete’ but now they want to do ‘Machete’ first. Oh yeah, oh yeah, they’re going to make that. That’s a definite.”
Is this the wishful thinking of a character-actor hoping to play his first major lead role? Or is it truly possible that Rodriguez will take some time to make this little “grindhouse” effort? Indeed, if it’s genuinely harkening back to those drive-in movies Rodriguez and QT love so much, MACHETE shouldn’t cost too much money, or take too much time to shoot. Trejo commented: ‘Machete’ wouldn’t be that hard to do.”
