One of our readers was lucky enough to attend the Dead by Dawn festival in Scotland, and was able to talk with DOG SOLDIERS director Neil Marshall about his upcoming flick THE DESCENT.
Said to be a cross between DELIVERANCE and ALIENS (sweet), THE DESCENT is the story of a lady who is involved in a nasty road accident, a year later she returns to the scene of the accident with 5 female (babes) friends. They stay at a nice wooden cabin and get ready for a bit of potholing.
Unfortunately for the girls they climb down the wrong cave and get stuck. Left with no choice but to try to find a way out they discover something has been living down there undiscovered…until now…hundreds of them.
The girls are forced to do battle with the creatures in order to stay alive or at lease in one piece.
It also sounds a lot like PITCH BLACK meets THE CAVE with the cast of BAYWATCH. Oh yes, some fun stuff here folks. According to Pete, the rough-cut trailer he was able to check out ‘rocked’, and Marshall promises that DESCENT is going to be one gory kick ass ride… an 18 rating [that] is mucho more bloodier than Dog Soldiers.[THE DESCENT] is a hell of a lot darker than Dog Soldiers which kept it’s tongue firmly in cheek, “so don’t go to the cinema expecting a bundle of laughs.”
He also went on to talk about DOG SOLDIERS 2: FRESH MEAT, a flim Marshall wants nothing to do with. His idea for the sequel went a little like this: Cooper (the hero from part 1) gets caught and locked up in a mental asylum where he meets the hitchhiker from the first. (you never actually see him die), the hiker has already bitten half the crazies and the nurses who are all about to turn into werewolves, Meanwhile Cooper can do nothing in his padded cell but wait for the impending doom.
But the studio thought that Cooper fleeing the scene from the first movie only to bump into a troop of American troops where the werewolf antics start all over again would be a better idea for a movie. Um… yeah. Marshall’s idea kicks the studio’s idea out of the water- as he was going for originality, and they’re going for a carbon copy. And from the sounds of it, the carbon copy is going to be straight to video. A shame really, as DOG SOLDIERS was a sleeper hit with a lot of fun and heart in it.
Be sure to stay tuned for more info. on THE DESCENT, as it nears it’s release this summer…
A special thanks to Pete “Aycliffe” Thompson for the awesome heads up!
