The ever-growing cast of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR has added yet another familiar face to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bilbo Baggins himself, Martin Freeman, has joined next year's comic book showdown in an undisclosed role. Freeman joins Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johannson, Anthony Mackie, Jeremy Renner, Chadwick Boseman, Daniel Bruhl, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sebastian Stan in what many are dubbing AVENGERS 2.5.
Marvel's Kevin Feige released this statement about the casting of Freeman.
"From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in 'The Office,' Martin's range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us," said "Captain America: Civil War" Producer Kevin Feige. "We couldn't be more honored or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe."
Martin Freeman had a stellar past few years with the lead role in Peter Jackson's HOBBIT trilogy, the role of John Watson opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC series Sherlock, an award-winning role in the FX series Fargo, and Edgar Wright's THE WORLD'S END. While it is unknown who he will be playing in the film, he could be anyone from a politician pioneering the Superhero Registration Act, a villain working with Baron Zemo, or an ally to either Cap or Tony Stark.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is coming together nicely under the watchful eye of directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. With the events at the conclusion of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, it will be interesting to see why the other key characters showcased in the final scene are not a part of this movie. But, I trust that all will be explained in due time.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR hits theaters on May 6, 2016.
