Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street may be moved to Christmas and bump Jack Ryan to 2014

Maybe you have been wondering why we haven’t seen a trailer for Kenneth Branagh‘s JACK RYAN reboot starring Chris Pine and Keira Knightley? It is set to open on Christmas and we haven’t seen a single piece of footage. Well, it may be Martin Scorsese‘s fault as he is not sure that THE WOLF OF WALL STREET will be ready for its already slotted November 15th release date. According to The Hollywood Reporter, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET is running at just about three hours right now and Scorsese is trying to figure out how to cut it down.

If THE WOLF OF WALL STREET does in fact get moved to December 25th, that would bump JACK RYAN to the three day weekend of January 17th. Paramount seems to be okay with the move as it would still allow the Leonardo DiCaprio movie to be eligible for awards season while JACK RYAN will clean up during the usually dead January month. This sounds like a win win for everyone, but there is just one catch: Martin Scorsese isn’t confident he can even make the Christmas release date.

Martin Scorsese is directing THE WOLF OF WALL STREET based on the screenplay by Terence Winter whom Scorsese has an association with on their HBO series BOARDWALK EMPIRE. The film also stars Matthew McConaughey, Jonah Hill, Jean Dujardin, Rob Reiner, Kyle Chandler, Margot Robbie, Jon Bernthal, Cristin Milioti, P.J. Byrne and Ethan Suplee and seems like a surefire Oscar contender. If the film doesn’t make it into the plans for 2013, JACK RYAN would stay put and who knows where THE WOLF OF WALL STREET would end up next year. This would mark the second high profile project starring DiCaprio to get bumped from awards season to a possible summer slot, the other being THE GREAT GATSBY.

My question is why does Scorsese even need to edit the movie? The iconic filmmaker should be at the point where he can release his films how he sees fit. Unless Scorsese himself feels the film is not flowing properly, I say give us the full three hour movie.
