Matthew Vaughn would love to make a Superman sequel with Henry Cavill

Despite appearing in Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it still feels as though we’re barely scratched the surface of Henry Cavill’s Superman. Fans are still hoping that we’ll get to see Cavill suit up once again, as is the actor himself, and there’s already a director ready to report for duty if that day comes. Matthew Vaughn was once the top choice to helm a sequel to Man of Steel and he recently told The Wrap that he would still love the chance to direct a Superman movie.

Even before he was a possible candidate to direct Man of Steel 2, Matthew Vaughn had pitched a Superman movie to Warner Bros. before they moved ahead with Zack Snyder’s version. “I was desperate to do a Superman film. Desperate,” Vaughn said. “I pitched a big Superman movie before they made ‘Man of Steel.’ I just got to work with Henry Cavill, which was lovely, on ‘Argylle’ and he’s unbelievable in it. I still think there’s room for a new Superman film, but a proper Superman film. A colorful, fun Superman movie. Not a dark one.” You’re preaching to the choir, Mr. Vaughn. If given the chance, Matthew Vaughn said that he would love to “go off and make a great Superman movie” with Henry Cavill in the title role. The director added that he felt it was a mistake to follow up Man of Steel with Batman v Superman as it didn’t feel right “putting the Batman vibe into the Superman world.

As Matthew Vaughn mentioned, he recently worked with Henry Cavill on Argylle, a spy film set to debut on Apple TV+. Although the film takes place in the modern world, Vaughn has said that it’s an ode to ’80s action thrillers like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. It also takes a few nods from James Bond with Vaughn saying that he “needed someone who was born to play Bond — which Henry is — and then nick him before Bond did. He plays a larger-than-life action hero with a wink. It’s very different from Kingsman.” Matthew Vaughn’s The King’s Man is set to debut in theaters tomorrow (check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray) and Henry Cavill can be seen in The Witcher season 2 on Netflix.
