Alright, alright, alright, it’s time to settle this once and for all. It may have started as a joke that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson must be related – come on, two Texas boys with trademark chill demeanors and so many shared personality traits have to be brothers! – but now there is an official call for a DNA test by none other than Maury Povich.
Speaking with E! News (via Today), Maury Povich said it’s tough to not want to do a DNA test for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. “I just heard about the possibilities…I mean, Matthew, I don’t know you. Woody, you’re my pal, but guess what? I would come out of retirement! We could do prime-time DNA: Maury’s back with Woody and Matthew…I’ll even get my showtime color back in my hair…Woody’s got my number. I’m ready!”
While it seems like a fitting move to have McConaughey and Harrelson take a DNA test to confirm or deny their brotherhood – and Harrelson has said he’s game – McConaughey may not necessarily be down for it. “I don’t know if we’re going to be calling you to do it on your show, but I like the way you’re thinking.” Is he afraid he’ll be told, “You are not the brother”?
While good friends and occasional collaborators – most notably on HBO’s True Detective – it is worth remembering that McConaughey and Harrelson did in fact play brothers in 1999’s EDtv. They have also been tied to Apple TV+ series Brother from Another Mother – oh come on, you’re just rubbing it in our faces now!
The 84-year-old Maury Povich announced his retirement last year from his namesake show, which, at 31 seasons and more than 5,500 episodes, was the longest-running daytime talk show with a single host. And while he lives on through his own meme format, he would undoubtedly get some extra attention if he could get McConaughey and Harrelson to agree to the test.
