With PIRANHA 3D hitting theaters this year, it’s no surprise that The Asylum has a rip-off with a similar name and story under its belt to capitalize on the larger film’s success. From the studio who brought us SNAKES ON A TRAIN, TRANSMORPHERS, and MEGA SHARK VS GIANT OCTOPUS comes… MEGAPIRANHA!

The new poster and a number of images for MEGAPIRANHA have made their way on The Asylum’s OFFICIAL WEBSITE, and boy does this thing look… as awesomely bad as you probably thought it would.

Written and directed by Eric Forsberg, and starring Tiffany (yes, the 80s pop star), Paul Logan, and Barry Williams (yes, from The Brady Bunch), MEGAPIRANHA goes a little something like this: A mutant strain of giant ferocious piranha escape from the Amazon and eat their way toward Florida.

The one thing MEGAPIRANHA has going for it is that the piranha’s are giant, which is not necessarily the case with PIRANHA 3D, though I could be totally wrong about that. Either way, it’s a pretty blatant rip-off of Alexandre Aja’s summer movie, but it looks like the laughs on The Asylum: MEGAPIRANHA is still rockin’ it’s April 27, 2010, street date, holding onto PIRANHA 3D’s old April release (the film now comes out in August).

Does that matter to The Asylum? Who knows. Click HERE to check out a boatload of new images from MEGAPIRANHA, and stick around as we eagerly await the film’s official trailer.

Thanks to Avery for the heads up!
