Mel produces Mad Max

Last we got an update on FURY ROAD – the planned fourth film in the MAD MAX series – we learned Tom Hardy wasn’t entirely confident that the role of Max Rockatansky was his, despite the news that this new MAX would take place right after THUNDERDOME. And while it still doesn’t seem like Mel Gibson will be attached to the film in an acting capacity (he is, after all, planning his own action flick: HOW I SPENT MY SUMMER VACATION) it appears that he’ll be involved behind-the-scenes…

Moviehole is the first site, that I know of, to point out the fact that Gibson’s Icon Productions is producing FURY ROAD, along with Kennedy/Miller Productions. Icon produced Mel’s last two directorial efforts, PASSION OF THE CHRIST and APOCALYPTO, as well as his upcoming thriller EDGE OF DARKNESS (which was directed by Martin Campbell).

Months ago, Mel commented on the possibility of once again portraying Max, saying, “I’m a bit old and long in the tooth for that number. You need somebody who can get around a bit quicker.”

Clint over at Moviehole suggests that Gibson narrate the film, which I actually think is a really cool idea. What say you? Would you like Mel to strap on the leather once more, or are you content to let Tom Hardy (or whoever) take the reigns?

FURY ROAD is scheduled for a 2011 release, with George Miller at the helm, and Charlize Theron (below) co-starring.
