The big thing to do in Hollywood these days is to auction off big-properties instead of going bankrupt. Earlier this month THE TERMINATOR franchise went up for auction, and now it appears that one of the original Hollywood moviehouses, MGM, may be going up on the auction block as well.
What does that mean for us horror fans? That POLTERGEIST remake may never end up happening, and the release date for Joss Whedon’s CABIN IN THE WOODS may be farther off than we had suspected.
Variety reports that the studio will essentially be auctioned off within the next few weeks, with Time Warner the number one likely studio for the purchase. If that’s the case, all of the rights to the MGM and United Artists film library would go to the hands of Time Warner, in their continuous effort to take over all media.
If you have a few billion dollars to spare, you too could be in the race to win the auction. If only I didn’t blow my savings on booze and women… Let’s hope this equals less remakes of classic MGM horror, but somehow I think this may invoke even more.
