Michael Peña cast in A Wrinkle in Time as villain

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

More awesome casting news from Ava DuVernay's A WRINKLE IN TIME adaption. This time they've nabbed Luis himself, Michael Peña!

The story concerns three celestial beings (Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah Winfrey) who help a little girl (Storm Reid) to find her missing father (Chris Pine) in an alternate dimension. Peña will be playing The Man with the Red Eyes, one of the main antagonists of the film. Red (as he's being named in the film, probably because spelling out "Man with the Red Eyes" constantly got tedious) is the telepathic leader of a planet where children are forced to do what they're told, which the characters must then escape from.

Peña is usually such a warm presence, so it'll be interesting to see how that translates to the role of a villain. However, the character is meant to be manipulative, so casting an obvious "villain" character actor (like your Hugos Weavings and Madds Mikkelsens) would probably have tipped their hand too early. Honestly, this just gets me more excited for the project!

A WRINKLE IN TIME will transport to theaters sometime in 2018. Meanwhile, Peña will next be seen in ANT MAN AND WASP, HORSE SOLDIERS, and the CHiPS remake.
