Miskatonic U: The Resonator – Full Moon announces new Lovecraft adaptation

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Full Moon may be best known for making films about killer puppets and dolls, but founder Charles Band has also been involved with some cool H.P. Lovecraft adaptations – and a few of those are considered to be part of a series called "Miskatonic U". That series (which includes FROM BEYOND, RE-ANIMATOR, and LURKING FEAR) is about to expand, with a story that pulls from the same source material as FROM BEYOND.

Full Moon has announced that MISKATONIC U: THE RESONATOR, "inspired by both the works of Lovecraft and beloved genre director Stuart Gordon", is being written and directed by William Butler, with production set to begin in Los Angeles in early December.

Here's the synopsis:

Set in the fictional college campus Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts where all sorts of fantastic and unworldly events have been known to unfold in Lovecraft lore, Miskatonic U: The Resonator follows six gifted students as they navigate life after one of them, Crawford Tillinghast, builds a machine known as the "Resonator."

The machine allows one to experience multiple dimensions while navigating the unsavory beasts that dwell within them. But things get complicated when Tillinghast realizes that the prototype of his creation has not only released murderous and deadly creatures into his world, but also has affected his own reality.

The cast has not yet been revealed, but Full Moon says the film will feature "cameos and performances from many of the original cast members that have long been associated with Gordon and the films from Band's Empire Pictures universe". Along with that, they also promise the movie will have plenty of "gooey practical special make-up effects".

Band had this to say about the project:

After working side by side with Stuart on FROM BEYOND and many other subsequent genre productions, it is a complete honor and privilege to be able to bring to life a project that is inspired by his brilliant mind and passion for the work of H.P. Lovecraft. We're very excited to be embarking on this ambitious and reverent entertainment."

I'm a big fan and supporter of Full Moon, so I'm excited to hear that they're delving into the world of Lovecraft again.
