In just one month of release, in the midst of a pandemic, and despite being available to watch on the HBO Max streaming service at the same time it's in theatres, director Adam Wingard's Godzilla vs. Kong has already earned more money at the box office than the previous entry in Warner Bros. and Legendary's "Monsterverse", Godzilla: King of the Monsters (watch it HERE), did in its entire run. King of the Monsters topped out at 386 million, Godzilla vs. Kong is currently at 407 million. So it's no surprise that Legendary is looking to continue this series with "one or more installments" – and they want Wingard to return to the series to helm another monster movie.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Wingard is in "early talks to return for another round of monster-on-monster action". The trade notes that there is no timetable known for this project, and given that two other high profile Wingard projects were recently announced (he's attached to make a Face/Off sequel for Paramount and a Thundercats movie for Warner Bros.), it looks like the director has a very busy schedule ahead of him.
There's no word on any writers being hired for future Monsterverse films, but
Wingard is said to have been very involved in creating Godzilla vs. Kong set pieces as well as in the worldbuilding of the movie’s Hollow Earth plotline, and he and Legendary have been cooking up plenty of ideas already.
THR even hears that one possible title being floated around at Warner Bros. and Legendary is Son of Kong.
The world previously got a Son of Kong movie in 1933, and you can watch it at THIS LINK. It was a rushed sequel to the original King Kong (watch HERE) – so rushed that it reached theatres just nine months after its predecessor.
It remains to be seen if Godzilla vs. Kong will be able to reach a box office total in the range of earlier Monsterverse films Godzilla 2014 (watch it HERE) and Kong: Skull Island (watch that HERE), which made 524 and 567 million dollars, but it has yet to open in markets like the U.K., Brazil, and Japan.
