What’s this now? A MORTAL KOMBAT rebirth?
It’s definitely possible folks! You see, a nifty little quasi-homemade short over at Youtube known as MORTAL KOMBAT REBIRTH is currently making the rounds at Hollywood agencies, with a real shot of being expanded into a full length feature film. Of course, the fact it stars badass action star Michel Jai White doesn’t hurt its cause, does it?!?
Actually, part of the reason why the short is so damn effective, is not only the solid cast that’s been assembled, it’s the dark, non-campy tone the flick looks to consciously embrace. It’s cool, violent, action -packed…this ain’t the MORTAL KOMBAT flick from the 90s, that’s for damn sure!
But the real question is: who the hell is behind MORTAL KOMBAT REBIRTH? According to Latino Review, the short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, who did a similar short for FAME last year.
Seriously, with all the hundreds if not thousands of fan made, semi-professional and student flicks that surface on the net, how many actually have enough merit to warrant a possible Hollywood adaptation? Slim to none, right? Glad to see someone out there treating a videogame property with austerity of a well crafted film, and not just some ancillary tie-in gimmick. Kudos, Mr. Tancharoen!
