Director Filip Jan Rymsza’s psychological thriller Mosquito State is set to be released through the Shudder streaming service on August 26th, and a trailer has arrived online to help you decide whether or not this is a movie you’d like to watch later this month. Check it out in the embed above.

Mosquito State is set 14 years in the past, in August of 2007, and tells the following story:

Isolated in his austere penthouse overlooking Central Park, the obsessive Wall Street data analyst Richard Boca is seeing ominous patterns: His computer models are behaving erratically, as are the swarms of mosquitos breeding in his apartment, an infestation that attends his psychological meltdown. A hypnotic plunge into the fragile mentality of an individual who can see patterns long before the rest of us, Mosquito State adds a significant chapter to the subgenre of urban isolation.

Rymsza wrote the screenplay with Mario Zermeno. Here’s an alternative synopsis:

On Wall Street, they’re called ‘quants’ — the intense data analysts whose mathematical prowess can make the difference between a fortune and a flop. Consumed with his work, Richard doesn’t often stray from his office or apartment. But when Richard decides to go to a company party, he makes two acquaintances: the mysterious, sylphlike Lena and one pesky mosquito, both of which take root in his mind, altering his existence in profound ways.

Beau Knapp (The Nice Guys) and Charlotte Vega (the Wrong Turn remake) star as Richard and Lena. They’re joined in the cast by Jack Kesy (the Death Wish remake, which Knapp was also in) and Olivier Martinez (Unfaithful).

Rymsza had this to say about the project:

For all the vampiric bloodletting in genre films, I felt like the mosquito, man’s deadliest enemy, was thoroughly unexplored and, after reading Michael Lewis’ Flash Boys, I became fascinated by those hidden away ‘quants’ who made high-frequency trading go.”

Mosquito State looks like it’s going to be quite strange and unnerving. Just going by the trailer, I can definitely imagine this film earning a solid fan base.
