Wow! I had all but forgotten that 1980’s MOTEL HELL was on the remake chopping block. Maybe that’s because the last time my man Eric reported on the remake waaaaay back in March, he said that the project had basically slipped into “release limbo”. Well, hold on to your hogs because Farmer Vincent ain’t licked yet!
According to those bad-ass bastards over at Bloody-Disgusting, a director is currently in final talks to buy the farm for the MGM remake. Said director is Steven C. Miller, who last helmed the pretty popular zombie indie AUTOMATON TRANSFUSION. No further details have been revealed, but at least it seems that MOTEL HELL’s return to the cinema is still a good possibility. I mean, I know people can be pretty harsh toward remaking classics (see PROM NIGHT, actually, don’t), however if done right (see HALLOWEEN (2007) or TEXAS CHAINSAW (2003)), you can have yourself one pretty sweet homage.
I really enjoyed the original MOTEL HELL for its way out-there, yet skillfully crafted story of Farmer Vincent’s famous sausage business run out of a hotel that snags unsuspecting tourists and harvests them to become tomorrow’s smoky breakfast links. It was funny, scary, and gory. I hope if the remake does come to fruition that all these aspects remain in tact.
