Alicia Vikander says Tomb Raider reboot will be “new” and “fresh”

A very fun little nugget of info I just realized is that it seems Lara Croft is the only character in the superhero/comic book/video game realm to be played exclusively by Oscar-winners across multiple film iterations. First there was Angelina Jolie, and now we have the uber-talented bombshell Alicia Vikander. Not only have they won Oscars, they won them AND THEN got cast as the iconic character—as if playing her is such an honor the Oscar needs to come first.

In an interview with Hitfix, Vikander assured us her and the people behind the new film adaptation of TOMB RAIDER plan to treat such an honorable heroine with the respect she deserves. Vikander says they will tell a story about “a young and untested Croft fighting to survive her first adventure.”

“They told me they were doing the film based on the reboot of the game from 2013. That is more of an origin story. You get into an emotional aspect of getting to know Lara hopefully in an in-depth way. So I hope that doing a film of the rebooted game will bring something new and fresh that’ll stand on its own two legs.”

And don’t mistake Vikander for an uninitiated noob, as the actress also talked about her own experiences playing the games as a child.

“I, with the rest of the world, was excited to see a female protagonist in a video game. I was a bit scared playing it when I was 12, 13. I had to go take little breaks.”

It seems like in less than a year Vikander has gone from an unknown to the highest commodity in the land. Last year she starred in movies like THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., EX MACHINA and THE DANISH GIRL, which she won her Oscar for earlier this year. On top of that, next week she will star alongside Matt Damon in JASON BOURNE, a franchise she choose to be in over ASSASSIN’S CREED, saying BOURNE was the “clear choice.” She talked about loving the franchise, and how she would always watch it with her roommates in London:

on Sundays while we didn’t have anything to do, we’d go, ‘Oh, what should we do?’ ‘Let’s just watch Bourne again.

A great taste in video games AND action movies? Give this woman another Oscar! Can’t find one? Then take one of Sean Penn’s.

JASON BOURNE comes out July 29, while Tomb Raider is expected out March 16, 2018
