The long in development Beauty and the Beast prequel series featuring Gaston and LeFou has officially been given a series order at Disney+. Starring Luke Evans and Josh Gad, the limited musical series has been ordered for eight episodes.

The series will function as a prequel to the 2017 live-action film and will see Luke Evans and Josh Gad reprise their roles as Gaston and LeFou, respectively. It has also been announced that newcomer Briana Middleton has landed the female lead as LeFou's stepsister, Tilly. Gad developed and wrote the prequel series along with Once Upon a Time creators Edward Ktsis and Adam Horowitz. The trip will also serve as executive producers/co-showrunners. Tony Award-nominated director Liesl Tommy will direct the first episode.

Per the series' official synopsis, "Set in the iconic kingdom of Beauty and the Beast years before the Beast and Belle's epic romance, the series will follow Gaston (Evans) and LeFou (Gad) as they set off with LeFou's stepsister, Tilly (Middleton), after a surprising revelation fro her past comes to light, sending the unlikely trio off on an unexpected journey filled with romance, comedy, and adventure. While the mysteries of the past are uncovered and the dangers of the present grow, old friends and new enemies reveal that this familiar kingdom harbors many secrets."

The Beauty and the Beast prequel series originated at ABC Signature and news of it being greenlit arrives as Disney marks the 30th anniversary of the 1991 animated classic that inspired the live-action version. Production on the show is expected to begin in the spring of 2022.
