Breaking Bad creator & Disney teaming up for Jack and the Beanstalk movie

Well, here's an odd pairing: Deadline has learned Disney has picked up a revisionist take on Jack and the Beanstalk from Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. Titled BEANSTALK, the planned film is based on an outline by Gilligan, and his BB and Better Call Saul screenwriter Thomas Schnauz will write the script. The site says Gilligan may also helm the movie, however "it’s very early days on the project."

The most recent big screen adaptation of the Jack and the Beanstalk tale was 2013's JACK THE GIANT SLAYER, which received mixed reviews from critics, and bombed at domestic theaters, grossing only $65 million. The movie did manage to pull in $197 million worldwide, but with a price tag of at least $195 million, I'm sure Legendary Pictures expected a much bigger total for the Bryan Singer-directed film.

The only reason I'm slightly interested in BEANSTALK is because of Vince Gilligan's involvement, however I'm definitely not sold on a "revisionist take" on the English fairy tale. It just doesn't sound like a good idea, and considering JACK THE GIANT SLAYER's underperforming box office run, I doubt many people are going to want to check out a new Jack and the Beanstalk movie.

The sophomore season of Better Call Saul will air in early 2016.
