Bridgerton: Netflix renews hit period drama for a second season

It has been called Pride and Prejudice meets Gossip Girl and that intriguing mix of period drama, scandal, and sex has turned Bridgerton into one of the biggest shows on Netflix. By the end of its first 30 days on the platform, it's expected to be watched by 63 million households so it should come as no surprise that Netflix has renewed the series for a second season.

The renewal was announced in true Bridgerton fashion by the series' narrator Lady Whistledown, voiced on the series by Julie Andrews. The announcement also came with the news that production of season two will begin this spring in the U.K. You can check out Lady Whistledown's press release below:

Casting is currently underway for season two with the production looking to add several new roles. One of them is for the female romantic lead, Kate Sheffield, opposite Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) that is featured in the book, "The Viscount Who Loved Me." Season one is based on the first book of Julia Quinn's "Bridgerton" series, "The Duke and I." The drama of season one has captivated those at home who binging the show like crazy and they're completely hooked on the romance between the eldest Bridgerton daughter, Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor), and the Duke of Hastings Simon Bassett (Regé-Jean Page). Quinn's novels run across eight entries and creator Chris Van Dusen has stated that each book will likely become a season on Netflix so, given the show's success, Bridgerton isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
