It will be a little under two years before audiences get to go back to a world filled with dinosaurs in JURASSIC WORLD 3, but in the meantime, they can get their need for prehistoric thrills fulfilled with the new short – BATTLE AT BIG ROCK. Director Colin Trevorrow (JURASSIC WORLD) opened up about the short film that was made under all our noses, and talked about how the story links to the world as it will be when the third entry comes stomping around in June 2021.

The teaser poster for the short dropped yesterday, and soon after the director spoke with Collider about the whole process – from keeping the whole thing a secret to the story itself – which takes place one year after the events of FALLEN KINGDOM and is “the first major confrontation between dinosaurs and humans.”

During the talk, he was asked about why there was a need to tell this story before JURASSIC WORLD 3 (which he is returning to direct) hits theaters.

The world is bigger than just the characters we’ve been following in the films. We’ve finally taken the story off Isla Nublar, we wanted to show a glimpse of that new reality. If this really happened, you’d see a series of random disconnected incidents that would create a pattern of chaos. I wanted to see one of those incidents.

After helming the first wildly successful entry in this new run of JURASSIC movies Trevorrow handed the directing duties to J.A. Bayona for FALLEN KINGDOM. At the end of that film, we see the dinosaurs being let loose into our very human and dino-less society, the ending hinting at plenty of chaos to come. That leaves for a big playground to mess around in, and Trevorrow said that when Universal pitched him the idea of making a short, he and writer Emily Carmichael (JW3) jumped at the chance to show a brief glimpse at what’s to come.

“It felt like a first step into a larger world after the last film,” he said “You have these animals loose in an unfamiliar environment, they’re disoriented, struggling to adapt. The first people they run into are bound to be camping. I wanted to see that.”

This short stars  Andre Holland (HIGH FLYING BIRD), Natalie Martinez (END OF WATCH), Melody Hurd (FATHERHOOD), and Pierson Salvador (NOS4A2), while the third movie will see the return of stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard

BATTLE AT BIG ROCK arrives September 15.
