Danny Glover says Lethal Weapon revival script resonates with current events

When it comes to action franchises that cinephiles love to see time and again, LETHAL WEAPON stands alongside other notable series like DIE HARD, TERMINATOR, and more recently, THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS. As such, it was back in January when talks of a fifth film in the Lethal Weapon franchise began making the rounds once more. And while some could be under the impression that Riggs and Murtaugh are now "too old for this shit," LETHAL WEAPON veteran Danny Glover recently offered Variety on update on the potential sequel.

During a recent interview, Glover confirmed to the outlet that there "had been a conversation" in January regarding another film in the franchise with both himself and co-star Mel Gibson poised to return as their iconic characters, Roger Murtaugh and Martin Riggs, respectively.

“I don’t want to give away the plot on the script that I read, but I found the plot had very strong relevance to some of the things that are happening today,” Glover said. “I can say that. But that was in January. History changes so fast. But yes, there’s been talk about it. I can only tell you, if it does happen, there is something extraordinary in it. If Lethal Weapon gives us some sort of contribution to understanding a little bit more. It would be interesting to do. It would be interesting to see how we take this within the political framework we are in; the economic framework that we are in. And especially that framework as opposed to the communities that have been affected by the kind of police violence, the kind of police standards, and the power that they exert as well. And what would be interesting from that vantage point is what that attempt could be like at this particular moment.”

Whispers of there being a fifth film in the LETHAL WEAPON franchise have been circulating for years. Word has it that the reason for the delay is because Gibson and Glover had a lack of interest in the scripts that were being presented. Be that as it may, Glover now sounds as if he's singing a different tune, and so it's possible that we'll be seeing a fifth chapter in the Lethal Weapon saga sooner rather than later.
