Disney to give Lilo & Stitch the live-action remake treatment

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

At this point I'm sure that we can just assume that Disney will be transforming all of their animated features into live-action, and THR has reported that the latest to get the live-action treatment will be 2002's LILO & STITCH.

Development on the project, which will be a live-action/CG hybrid, is still in the early stages but Disney has hired up-and-comer Mike Van Waes (THE CROOKED MAN) to pen the script for the film. It's also not clear at this time if the project will be headed to theaters or whether it will launch on Disney's upcoming streaming service. The original animated film told the story of a young Hawaiian girl named Lilo and an extraterrestrial dog-like creature known as Experiment 626, but he's soon given the name Stitch after being adopted by Lilo. Although Stitch is a force of chaos and destruction, he eventually develops a close bond with Lilo and together the pair avoid the pursuing aliens who have been dispatched to capture him. LILO & STITCH was followed by several direct-to-video sequels and TV shows, which has kept the series alive over the years since the film's release.

Disney has a number of live-action remakes on their upcoming slate, including Tim Burton's DUMBO on March 29, 2019, Guy Ritchie's ALADDIN on May 24, 2019, Jon Favreau's THE LION KING on July 19, 2019, Charlie Bean's LADY AND THE TRAMP on Disney's streaming service in 2019, and Niki Caro's MULAN on March 27, 2020.
