Henry Cavill says he hasn’t given up on playing Superman

When the sun rises on December 20th, so too will Henry Cavill's THE WITCHER, a fantasy action series that's poised to cast a wicked spell over Netflix subscribers and then some. With his latest venture being framed as an epic with GAME OF THRONES-like potential, it stands to reason that Cavill's schedule could soon be overtaken by swords, sorcery, and steamy sex scenes that are bound to have equestrians bucking with joy. Of course, if the scrying mirror reflects no lies about THE WITCHER's quality, and Cavill is to star as Geralt of Rivia for the foreseeable future, does this mean that his days as the Man of Steel are all but done? Thankfully, Cavill says nay, and remains hopeful that his time as the Man of Tomorrow are not yet numbered.

Recently while speaking with the good people over at Men's Health, Cavill talked extensively to the outlet about his Superman status, and how he aims to one day re-emerge as the Metropolis Marvel.

To begin, Cavill expressed something akin to shame for becoming lax with regard to keeping up with Supes on the printed comic book page. “I’ve been quite disconnected from all of this for quite a while,” Cavill confessed. “I’m very behind.”

To be fair, losing the thread of a comic book character as prevalent as Superman is a very easy thing to do in this day and age. To begin, Superman stars in any number of DC Comics titles across the publisher's wide and winding spectrum. Hell, those who're able to keep track of even half the character's ongoing adventures deserve a clap on the back for their efforts. In other words, Cavill has nothing to apologize for, as he's been quite busy while taking a break from leaping tall buildings in a single bound on the big screen. Also, let's not forget that Cavill's BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE had earned a worldwide total of $873 million, an amount that would earn any superhero a fair amount of rest.

Here's the thing, though. As impressive as the box office returns for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE undoubtedly are, Cavill's Superman did suffer something of a fall from grace thanks to Joss Whedon's ill-received JUSTICE LEAGUE. Oh, and then there was the whole mustache-gate nonsense, wherein the removal of Cavill's Fallout face fuzz left the Man of Steel looking like the winner in a game of Chubby Bunny. In the end, Cavill's time as the Man of Steel went out with a whimper as opposed to a bang, but is he through playing the Last Son of Krypton? Again, Cavill says nay.

When asked about his hopes of returning as Superman, Cavill told Men's Health that despite numerous reports claiming that his time as Supes has come to an end, he's not ready to give up the cape just yet"

I’ve not given up the role. There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.

There you have it, folks, straight from the the controversial mustache manipulator himself.

Later in the interview, Cavill was asked to present his take on Superman's most recent films, including MAN OF STEEL, BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, and of course, the much-maligned JUSTICE LEAGUE: “A great starting point. If I were to go back, I don’t think I’d change anything.”

Lastly, Cavill was asked if he has anything to say about BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE in particular, to which he said that the comic book spectacle is “Very much a Batman movie. And I think that realm of darkness is great for a Batman movie.” As for Supes' contribution to JUSTICE LEAGUE, Cavill is of the mind that “It didn’t work.” And do you know what? I'm positive that there are any number of #ReleaseTheSnyderCut enthusiasts who would agree with you, good sir.

It stands to reason that Cavill has a bright future ahead of him, and that fans of his work can look forward to seeing plenty of him both on the big and small screen in the years to come. When and if he'll return as Superman though, that's yet to be determined. The best thing that fans can do now is to keep their fingers crossed, and hope for some very exciting announcements from Warner Bros. and DC down the road.
