While pundits expected AVENGERS: ENDGAME to do well at the box office, the movie is blasting every record out of the sky. After two weeks in theaters it has become the number two movie of all time around the world, officially passing James Cameron’s TITANIC, a feat no movie has been able to do since Cameron’s *other” massive movie, AVATAR. It’s been a few days since ENDGAME surpassed the Oscar-winning romance epic, and now Cameron has tipped his cap to Marvel’s superhero team for sinking TITANIC’s massive total in such a short amount of time.

The director took some time away from directing a couple of sequels to head over to Instagram with an image of the Titanic crashing into the Avengers symbol as if it were a big, purple iceberg. Across the front of the clever but also slightly dark image is a message from Cameron, reading, “To Kevin and Everybody at Marvel: An iceberg sank the real Titanic. It took the Avengers to sink my Titanic. Everyone here at Lightstorm Entertainment salutes your amazing achievement. You’ve shown the movie industry is not only alive and well, it’s bigger than ever! – Jim Cameron.”

Over this last weekend AVENGERS: ENDGAME became the fastest movie ever to hit $2 billion around the world, doing so in 11 days, leaving AVATAR's record of 47 days in the dust. The superhero epic is nearing $2.3 billion going into its third weekend and is now en route to passing the astonishing total of Cameron's sci-fi-action drama of nearly $2.8 billion. While that's still a big chunk of change left to go, AVENGERS still has several weeks left in theaters to make that sweet, sweet money. In hindsight, this new Avengers should've been titled, AVENGERS: KINGSLAYER, but hey…20/20.

Cameron is a class act this little act of congratulations, and while his fans try to for some reason invalidate AVENGERS' run compared to TITANIC in the post's comments section, he makes an excellent point at the end. Seeing a movie like ENDGAME make this much money is so exciting because it's evidence audiences will still show out in droves for a theatrical experience in this age of streaming.
