Leslie Jones voices anger over new Ghostbusters; Hopes it won’t star all men

The news about Sony’s plans to do yet another GHOSTBUSTERS movie – this time with Jason Reitman at the helm – is still being hotly discussed on social media, one reason being the fact it will ignore the 2016 reboot. The majority of those involved with the making of the last outing have remained silent about the news, but one of the movie’s stars, Leslie Jones, has wasted no time voicing her anger at the studio over the move, feeling it’s an effort to bury the existence of their movie.

Last Tuesday news broke about Sony’s plans for the new GHOSTBUSTERS to continue off the timeline of the original 1984 movie, in effect ignoring the 2016 reboot directed by Paul Feig and starring Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon. Jones pulled no punches in a tweet on Saturday aimed at the move, which she called “insulting” and a — *check notes* — “dick move.”

“So insulting. Like f*ck us. We dint count. It’s like something trump would do. (Trump voice)”Gonna redo ghostbusteeeeers, better with men, will be huge. Those women ain’t ghostbusteeeeers” ugh so annoying. Such a d*ck move. And I don’t give f*ck I’m saying something!!”

The tweet soon spread and received thousands of comments (no doubt all very respectful), resulting in yet another response from Jones wherein she feared that having this movie star all men would contribute to a “boys are better” mentality.

“When the point is if they make this new one with all men and it does well which it will. It might feel that ‘boys are better’ it makes my heart drop. Maybe I could have use different words but I’m allowed to have my feelings just like them.”

There’s no word yet on who will play the new ‘Busters, with speculation going around that it could unite members of the original cast with a diverse band of new talent. Reitman, the son of the original movie’s director Ivan Reitman, told EW after the news broke that he has “respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses,” but confirmed it would ignore the events of the 2016 movie.

Anyone who followed the entire process of the reboot — and the exhausting news around it — knows it always faced an uphill battle. After it was announced the movie would have an all-female cast the project began being attacked online from fans of the original and internet trolls – with Jones a primary target – resulting in her temporarily leaving social media altogether. Upon release, the movie received solid reviews from critics but failed to make impressive numbers at the box office.  Making just over $200 million worldwide off a $100+ million budget, all plans for the future of the franchise were put on hold, all until Sony decided to take the nostalgia route and hand a Reitman the wheel.

Though the 2016 movie had a lot of haters, I am not one of them. Though the structure of the movie leaves a lot of be desired, I have a ton of fun watching it thanks to the performances from the hilarious cast, with Feig knowing how to best utilize his ensemble to full effect. It’s funny and entertaining,  if not spectacular, and I always thought they should get another shot in some capacity. That doesn't look like it will be the case, sadly, so I do hope this new outing brings back some old faces and a myriad of new ones.
