Lumberjanes animated series to set up camp at HBO Max

Lumberjanes, HBO Max, Noelle Stevenson

I am indeed a happy camper this afternoon after learning that the Eisner-winning Boom! Studios comic book Lumberjanes is in development to be an animated series for HBO Max. Co-created by Noelle Stevenson, Grace Ellis, Shannon Watters, and Brooklyn A. Allen, Stevenson is set to write and executive produce this exciting adaptation for audiences all across the globe.

Lumberjanes is currently in development at HBO Max, and once the powers that be see how amazing it's bound to be, plans are to launch the show with an animated special that would then lead into a series. In addition to her aforementioned roles, Stevenson will also direct the special as well as a handful of episodes.

Lumberjanes centers around five rad ladies – April, Jo, Mal, Molly, and Ripley – who fight monster baddies with the power of friendship! At Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady Types, things are not what they seem. Three-eyed foxes. Secret caves. Anagrams! Luckily, Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are five rad, butt-kicking best pals determined to have an awesome summer together…and they're not gonna let a magical quest or an array of supernatural critters get in their way! The mystery keeps getting bigger. (via Boom! Studios)

As a comic book series, Lumberjanes launched in 2014. Since that time, the laugh-out-loud series has run for over 70 issues and 13 graphic novels. It's also won multiple Eisner Awards, and won the GLAAD award for outstanding comic book thanks to its bold sense of adventure, emphasis on togetherness, and outstanding LGBTQ+ representation. If you've yet to check it out, I highly recommend it. It's like if the Scooby gang went camping and discovered that all manner of mysterious creatures were living among them.

At one time, a feature adaptation of the series was being set up with Twentieth Century Fox, but after Disney bought them out, the project fell to the wayside. Thankfully, HBO Max has realized that Lumberjanes is a property worth exploring, and so soon fans will see some of their favorite characters come to life onscreen after all.

Ross Richie and Stephen Christy will executive produce the series for Boom! Boom!’s Mette Norkjaer will co-executive produce along with co-creators Watters, Ellis, and Allen. Stevenson was the showrunner for Netflix's tremendously popular She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and I have no doubt that fans will be looking forward to her next big animated endeavor. Let's pack our bags and set off for adventure!
