Deadline is reporting that Morgan Freeman is joining Tom Cruise in the post-apocalyptic Universal film OBLIVION. In it, Tom Curise plays the last man on the surface of Earth, a man who was left behind to repair ships to hunt down invading aliens.

In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

Joseph Kosinski is the author of the comic of the same name of which the film’s based, and he’s known to gamers as the creator of the famous “Mad World” “Gears of War” commercial, as well as the “Starry Night” “Halo 3” commercial. He was the director of TRON: LEGACY and is working on the remake of THE BLACK HOLE for Disney as well.

No word on what Morgan Freeman will play in OBLIVION but it’s apparently a big role. OBLIVION is scheduled for a release date of July 19th, 2013.
