Neil Patrick Harris to head down the rabbit hole for The Matrix 4

The Matrix 4, Neil Patrick Harris

I'll save you the trouble of checking your calendar and let you know that it is not April 1st. Variety has reported that Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) has joined the cast of the fourth installment of THE MATRIX franchise in what is being described as a secret role.

While it may seem a little odd for Barney Stinson to be heading down the rabbit hole, the mere fact that we're getting another MATRIX sequel at all is still strange to me. THE MATRIX co-director Lana Wachowski is returning to helm the sequel, this time without Lilly Wachowski, and both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are set to reprise their roles of Neo and Trinity. Just last week it was announced that AQUAMAN actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has signed on to play the leading role, but plot details are naturally being kept under wraps. Keanu Reeves has teased that he's read that script and that "It's very ambitious. As it should be!" Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell co-wrote the script with Lana Wachowski, and production on the film is expected to kick off early next year.

"We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana," said Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman, Toby Emmerich.  "Lana is a true visionary—a singular and original creative filmmaker—and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe." Lana Wachowski added, "Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends."
