Netflix to have a scripted series based on Selena Quintanilla take the stage

It sounds as if Netflix has a song in its heart, as the streaming giant is said to have ordered a scripted series focusing on the life of Tejano music sensation Selena Quintanilla. Expected to be framed as a coming of age story, the series will explore Selena's life-altering journey toward becoming a legend of both stage and screen, as well as the many trials and tribulations she and her family faced during her rise to fame and fortune.

“Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory,” said Suzette Quintanilla, the Latin Pop princess' sister. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives. We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come.”

Writing the upcoming Selena series for Netflix is Moisés Zamora, who will also serve as an executive producer alongside Jaime Dávila, Rico Martinez, Suzette Quintanilla, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., and Simran A. Singh. Meanwhile, Campanario Entertainment will produce.

“Selena and the entire Quintanilla family are an inspiration to many and especially to me, a millennial of the same heritage,” said Jaime Dávila, president of Campanario Entertainment. “Selena’s career achievements are legendary, but our scripted series will focus on the incredible story of a Mexican-American family and how an extraordinary young woman transcended categories and borders to become a global star. I can’t imagine a better partner than Netflix to celebrate Selena and her family’s lives.”

During her time at the top, Selena sold over 60 million albums worldwide, a feat that caused her to be known throughout the musical community as the Queen of Tejano, a form of Mexican-American folk and pop music. Sadly, Selena was murdered at the tender age of 23 after being shot by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar in 1995. As a once-trusted associate, Saldívar had experienced a falling out with the singing sensation and her family before shooting Selena in her right shoulder, severing an artery which caused severe blood loss and eventually, death.
