New Mutants director Josh Boone shares new film storyboards

Late Thursday evening, Marvel unleashed the first trailer for director/writer Josh Boone's X-MEN: THE NEW MUTANTS to rave reactions from fans who are in the mood for a bit of horror-centric mutant mayhem. Today, Boone has taken to his official Instagram account to share a series of storyboard images that coincide with the trailers intense footage.

"From storyboard to the shot," Boone said. "I board all my stuff with the great @ashleyrguillory #newmutants #storyboards #thenewmutants #xmen." The first image that Josh released features GAME OF THRONES actress Maisie Williams as the mutant Wolfsbane, looking toward the camera and in obvious distress. In the trailer, this scene then cuts to one of Williams standing in a shower stall as she seemingly continues to struggle against the effects of her blossoming mutant powers.

You can see the image for this scene below:

The next storyboard shot in the series features a young Illyana Rasputin (one of my favorite mutants of all time) clutching a stuffie that looks an awful lot like the fire-breathing dragon Lockheed.

Finally, we're shown a storyboard image which contains Blu Hunt's Danielle Moonstar (Mirage) laying on the ground, with directional arrows stabbing in from every corner of the frame, pointing toward Dani's face. If you've been doing your New Mutants reading assignments, you'd know that this is a wink to the original New Mutants, and the Demon Bear storyline.

In talking about the film actress Anya Taylor-Joy who plays Magik in the upcoming film said “I think the nicest thing about it is that Josh Boone, our director, he’s just such a fan of the comics, and he really loves them so much that he’s really interested in just making sure that we do the comics justice for the people that love the characters. You know, we all feel so lucky to be such incredibly loved characters."

I happen to be one of those people who is very pleased with the first trailer for the new film. Above all else, this project looks different, and I feel like that is a very good thing. While I'm always excited to check out the latest comic book film adaptation, I think it's about time that the genre begins to branch out a little and give us something that perhaps we haven't seen before. Hell, if this movie turns out to be a major success, it might very well signal to studios that they can take even more risks when it comes to super hero cinema. I know I'll be there opening weekend for this one.

X-MEN: THE NEW MUTANTS is scheduled to haunt cinemas on April 13, 2018.
