Nicolas Winding Refn's next film might be The Avenging Silence

The Avenging Silence Nicolas Winding Refn

Nicolas Winding Refn hasn't decided on his follow-up to THE NEON DEMON yet, but it could be a spy flick titled THE AVENGING SILENCE. During a conversation with Collider, the director said it will probably be his next movie, and he also shared a few other details on the potential film.

Refn says THE AVENGING SILENCE is set in Tokyo (and he wants to film it there), and will focus on a character similar to the one Ryan Gosling played in DRIVE, Vithaya Pansringarm's in ONLY GOD FORGIVES, and Mads Mikkelsen's One-Eye from VALHALLA RISING.

Yeah, it’s basically a character that appears in my other movies that will now appear again. Having done The Neon Demon, which was predominantly women protagonists, but the character that Mads [Mikkelsen] plays in Valhalla Rising, Ryan [Gosling] plays him in Drive or Vithaya [Pansringarm] in Only God Forgives, I want to make a new movie with that character.

Does some of this sound familiar? It should; here's what Nicolas Winding Refn had to say about his plans for a VALHALLA RISING sequel from a couple of years ago.

I had this idea of Mads Mikkelsen to go back to the origins of this character. But make the movie in Tokyo.

During that interview, he also described the city as "a world onto itself," and said the sequel would be "about the future." Are you down for a Refn-directed Tokyo-set spy movie?

Nicolas Winding Refn's THE NEON DEMON starring Elle Fanning, Alessandro Nivola, Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves and Jena Malone doesn't have a release date yet, but is expected to open in 2016.
