Update: Shortly after news of Rian Johnson's brand-new Star Wars trilogy broke, it was announced that Disney and Lucasfilm are also planning a live-action Star Wars TV series to air on the studio's forthcoming streaming service that's due to launch by the end of 2019! The company will also create series for the following properties to be streamed on the new service: Pixar's MONSTERS INC., HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, and an original program related to Marvel comics.

You'd better hold onto something, Star Wars fans, because Lucasfilm has just announced that Rian Johnson, director of STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, will help create a brand-new Star Wars trilogy! The project will focus on Johnson developing a completely new story, with original characters, set in a different galaxy. As part of the arrangement, Johnson has been tapped to write and direct the first film in the series, with longtime collaborator Ram Bergman onboard to produce. No other plans for the sequels have been shared at this time.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

Previously, Johnson had been courted to helm the next chapter of the Star Wars trilogy, though with this new project being as massive as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if we see THE LAST JEDI director dedicate all of his efforts toward building fans a brand-new universe to enjoy and fight over.

Rian Johnson's STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI will force its way into theaters on December 15th.
