A new Nickelodeon promo has given us a first look at characters set to be featured in the upcoming CGI-animated Rugrats reboot. Sandwiched among several of Nickelodeon's classic characters in the pic are Rugrats Susie Carmichael, Lil DeVille, Tommy Pickles, Phil DeVille, and Chuckie Finster. Surprisingly, not much has changed for Nick's mischievous diaper demons since last we saw them in 2004. As a matter of opinion, they look exactly the way they always have, which is sure to please fans of the original series. Then again, perhaps it won't, seeing as some folks like to go on the attack regardless of how one-to-one a reboot is presented.

Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain, Rugrats ran on Nickelodeon from 1991-2004 and revolved around a group of talking babies that were nothing short of fearless when it came to engaging in a grand adventure. Okay, so maybe Chuckie was a bit of a crybaby, but we loved him anyway. With his wild Yahoo Serious-like hair, nasally voice, and ending desire to be accepted by the rest of the group.

Word of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon's CG-animated Rugrats reboot was announced all the way back in 2018. As per the order, Rugrats is in line to get a 26-episode CG-animated series in addition to a CG-animate/live-action hybrid film.

"Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures," Nickelodeon said. "What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie, and pals."

The upcoming Rugrats film, set to be directed by David Bowers (FLUSHED AWAY, ASTRO BOY, DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: RODRICK RULES), was originally expected to toddle into theaters in November 2020 but was then removed from Paramount's schedule in 2019. With regard to the series, Rugrats was supposed to come crawling onto screens in Fall 2020 but that no longer seems to be the case. All that said, both projects are likely to arrive sometime in 2021, unless something nefarious happens between now and then, of course.
