Rumor: The next Spider-Man will not be white

When Sony and Marvel came to a deal about the use of Spider-Man, a big part of that deal was getting rid of Andrew Garfield. Nothing against the guy, but Marvel wanted to give a (yet another) fresh start for everyone's favorite webhead. We've heard some casting rumors already in regards to Dylan O'Brien and Logan Lerman possibly picking up where Maguire and Garfield left off, but this latest rumor tosses those casting choices out the window. Jeff Sneider of The Wrap recently jumped on Meet the Movie Press to discuss all things film-related and when the topic of a new Spider-Man came up, he had some interesting insight to share.

Jeff Sneider on the new Spider-Man:

Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not gonna be white. Spider-Man is not going to be white. I am 95% sure. Spider-Man’s gonna be, most likely, black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white. I don’t think it’s going to be Peter Parker. I really feel strongly. Sony has an opportunity to beat Marvel and DC to the punch with sort of a major black comic book character.

Sneider didn't go into any more detail than that, so whether this will be a completely different take on Peter Parker or some straight-up Miles Morales, who knows?!? This does, however, fall in line with Marvel and DC's push to have their heroes portrayed by not just white males. Furthermore, this would also help to separate this Spidey from the two we've seen before. Nothing is set in stone yet, but I imagine Marvel wants to get an actor locked down soon for Spider-Man's role in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.

Sony's next Spider-Man film is scheduled to land in theaters on July 28, 2017.
