Solo Spider-Man MCU films will not air on Disney+

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Aside from a few hiccups that had many screaming incoherently like Donald Duck, Disney+ launched yesterday to the delight of millions. Although upcoming original programming like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and The Mandalorian is certainly a…ahem…plus, what intrigues me the most is the Disney+ catalog. Hell, just a few weeks ago Disney dropped a video showing precisely what would be available on its streaming platform and the video was OVER AN HOUR LONG.  That's damn impressive.

One of the more appealing aspects of said catalog is the deluge of MCU films instantly available at your fingertips, everything from 2008's IRON MAN to this year's AVENGERS: ENDGAME. However, there are two MCU films that are noticeably absent from Disney+ and they involve everyone's favorite webslinger from Queens. Both SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING and SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME are missing from the MCU slate and if you were hoping they'd swing their way onto the streaming platform any time soon, you're out of luck.

Disney+ head of content Ricky Strauss put it bluntly, "We love our friends at Sony, but we don’t have any plans to have the live-action Spider-Man movies on Disney+" Ouch. That stings like a Doc Ock metal tentacle to the nether regions. I guess this shouldn't come as a huge surprise however. Sony still owns the character and the films centered around him, Disney just has creative control. Strauss did hedge his bets a little stating even though there are no current plans to stream the solo Spidey films, anything is possible. However, I think it's more likely that I'll be bitten by a radioactive spider and develop super powers or snag a date with Zendaya before that happens. Spider-Man is still Sony's baby and they are clinging to it like a vertigo ridden Green Goblin on a hovercraft.

For those of you not content with just seeing Spidey in the Marvel team up films, I do have some good news. The awesome Spider-Man animated show from the 1990s is currently available on the streaming service. It's not Peter Parker battling Mysterio but at least it's something.

Disney+, sans solo Spidey films, is currently available in the USA, Canada, and the Netherlands.
