Paramount Pictures had a bit of fun on Twitter today as they unveiled the official title for the sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog. If you're expecting some epic and through-provoking title you may have to look elsewhere but the studio is clearly having fun with expectations with the announcement and it hints at the arrival of a fan favorite from the video games.

The studio took to the official Twitter page of the film and released the official title sequence with a short little video that also announced the film's release date of April 8, 2022. The title will be, drumroll please, Sonic The Hedgehog 2. The caption for the announcement reads "Groundbreaking. Thought provoking. Extremely obvious. Presenting the official title of the #SonicMovie sequel: Sonic the Hedgehog 2!" You'll also notice that in the "2" there is a hint of Sonic's sidekick Tails, who was teased at the end of the first film. You can check out the official title announcement from the movie's Twitter page below:

The first Sonic The Hedgehog had quite the road to financial success with began with widespread negativity following the first trailer for the film which led to fan backlash and the film being delayed from its initial release date. Being that video game films tend to be a bust at the box office and with critics, all signs pointed to Sonic being DOA but the film was greeted with a positive reception, with Jim Carrey's portrayal of Dr. Robotnik getting notable praise. Sonic The Hedgehog also had the distinction of being one of the final notable films to play without much interruption in theaters before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed every major title that followed in 2020. The film ultimately grossed $148.9 million at the domestic box office and $319.7 million worldwide.

Sonic The Hedgehog focused on the titular character, who has the ability to run supersonic speeds, as he teams up with the local town sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) to find his lost rings and escape the mad scientist, Dr. Robotnik (Carrey), whose goal is to use Sonic's powers for world domination. The film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic The Hedgehog.
