I think these days I hear BOONDOCK SAINTS ragged on more than any movie that used to be a cult classic. It’s now cool to hate on it, but I still stand by the original as a very entertaining film.
My view of it was a bit tainted with the release of the sequel, which did its absolute best to ineffectively copy the original in almost every way. Despite the obvious set up for a third film, I doubt one is coming, as it took ten years to even get the second released. But the Saints may continue marching on with a new TV series that director Troy Duffy is theorizing about.
“We’ve been approached to do a possible Boondock Saints TV series. So the fans may be getting a part 3 as a television show. We might be able to pull that off….I actually called both Sean and Norman and they both said “hell yeah, we’ll drop everything.”
A show with the original duo actually onboard? This went from a terrible idea to mildly interesting. In fact, I think a show might not be a decent concept, and is at the very least worth a shot. I could see a cable network like FX picking it up, as already you’ve got some level of a built in fanbase, making it less inherently risky than a new IP. Also, the format of a TV show would force the characters into new situations, and they couldn’t repeat the failures of the sequel, which copied the original film to the point where it was almost a parody.
Yes, it could be a disaster, but I’d sure as hell watch the pilot. What about you?
