The LEGO Movie sequel to feature more “female stuff”

With Warner Bros looking to expand the success of THE LEGO MOVIE into a franchise with both a NINJAGO feature film, a LEGO BATMAN movie, and a planned sequel to this year’s animated hit, there needs to be some consideration for the audience. Specifically, the female audience. With only two female characters in Elizabeth Banks‘ Wyldstyle and Alison Brie‘s Unikitty, THE LEGO MOVIE was definitely skewed towards young males. But, it looks like that is going to change for THE LEGO MOVIE 2.

In an interview with BBC News, producer/writers Chris Miller and Phil Lord let loose that THE LEGO MOVIE 2 would feature more “female characters and female stuff”.

“You can feel that the whole movie culture is now starting to wake up to the fact that half the audience are women,” Lord said. “Frozen is reflective of that—and I think we are all going to find a great flourishing of women filmmakers and subject matter in the future.”

Disney’s FROZEN has opened the floodgates for female audiences yearning for strong leading characters. Both NINJAGO and LEGO BATMAN are going to draw males thanks to ninjas, monsters, and superheroes, so the main series can stand to diversify a bit. Wyldstyle was a very popular character and a big Halloween costume just a few weeks ago. This seems to be a wise decision that will not only bring in big bucks for Warner Bros but also broaden the scope of the brand that has catered specifically to males over the last few decades.

THE LEGO MOVIE 2 is expected to hit theaters in 2018.
