Tron will no longer fight for the users; Disney pulls plug on Tron 3

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Bad news today for those of us who were looking forward to TRON: ASCENSION; Disney has elected to pull the plug on the TRON sequel. This comes as a bit of a surprise to me as TRON: LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski was set to return as well as both Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde; prep on the film was underway and it was thought that TRON: ASCENSION would shoot in Vancouver this fall.

THR broke the news and, while they didn't give a reason for the cancellation, many suspect that the poor performance of TOMORROWLAND may have played a part in Disney's decision; that, or they needed to make room for yet another live-action adaption of one of their classic animated films. It's true that TRON: ASCENSION hadn't officially been given the green light yet, but it sure did seem like all the pieces were in place for the film to move forward. Whatever the reason, it's a shame.

TRON: LEGACY may not have been the greatest film but I thought that it did a great job at bringing TRON back into the world, not to mention that it featured a rockin' soundtrack. I had high hopes that TRON: ASCENSION would improve on what was built in LEGACY and deliver the ultimate TRON film, but I guess we're out of luck.
